Former Michael Vaughan, the England captain, has endorsed Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's T20 captain after the World Cup, claiming that it will relieve some of the burdens on the superstar batsman.
Kohli has been the captain of the Indian team in all three forms since MS Dhoni stepped down in 2017. The 32-year-old cited workload management as a reason for stepping down as India's T20I captain, and it remains to be seen who would succeed him after the World Cup.
"Well Done... it's a very selfless decision and one that will hopefully allow you some lovely space to unwind a little away from all the demands," Vaughan said in response to Kohli's Instagram post.
As India's Twenty20 captain, Kohli has a 27-14 win-loss record, while his Royal Challengers Bangalore club is still chasing their first IPL crown.
Virat Kohli is yet to win an ICC trophy as captain, but the team's series victories in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England, and the West Indies under his guidance will be remembered fondly.
As of now, Rohit Sharma, India's opener, is the favorite to succeed Kohli as captain in the limited-overs tournament. While the Indian cricket board is not in a rush to pick a replacement, Rohit Sharma, the IPL's most successful captain with five titles, is expected to be elevated to the position of India's Twenty20 captain.
Virat Kohli's winning % is higher than MS Dhoni's, who led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. India has won 27 of 45 matches under Kohli, with two games drawn and the same number abandoned, for a winning percentage of 65.11.
